According to The Homeless Hub’s State of Homeless in Canada 2016:

  • 35,000 Canadians are homeless any given night
  • At least 235,000 Canadians experience homelessness in a year
  • 27.3% are women, 18.7% are youth
  • Homelessness amongst older adults and seniors is on the rise
  • 4.3% of Canadians are Indigenous, yet 28-34% of the shelter population is Indigenous
  • 2,950 veterans (military and police) experienced homelessness between 2005 – 2014
  • In Edmonton, the number of people experiencing street homelessness has decreased by 43% since 2008, when numbers were at an all-time high.According to the 2016 local homelessness count:
    • 1,752 people were still experiencing homelessness
    • Indigenous individuals are 9 x more likely to experience homelessness, compared to the overall population
    • 74% Male; 25% Female; 1% Transgender
    • 48% identified as Indigenous (5.4% of Edmonton’s overall population identifies as Indigenous)
    • 29% of homeless population are under the age of 18
    • Women make up 40% of those provisionally accommodated (people who are couch surfing, for example)
    • 3% were recent immigrants or refugees
    • 70 people were veterans of the military or RCMP
